Elon Musk recently announced a massive new project called TERAFAB (sometimes referred to as the Terafab or Terafactory) during a launch event in Austin, Texas, on March 21, 2026.

This is a joint venture between Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI aimed at building the world’s largest and most vertically integrated semiconductor facility.

What is the TERAFAB?

The project is designed to bring every stage of chip manufacturing under one roof—from design and lithography to memory production and final testing. The goal is to produce one terawatt of AI computing power annually.

Key Highlights of the Project

Location: Planned for the North Campus of Giga Texas in Austin, though some manufacturing operations may expand to a separate, larger site due to the scale (estimated at 100 million square feet).

Investment: Estimated at $20 billion to $25 billion, making it one of the most expensive industrial projects in history.(google) 

Two Specialized Chip Types:

Terrestrial Chips (AI5): Optimized for Tesla Full Self-Driving (FSD) system, Cybercab robotaxis, and Optimus humanoid robots.

Space Chips (D3): Radiation-hardened processors designed for a massive "Orbital Data Center" system—a constellation of a million satellites intended to run AI workloads in space.

The Space Strategy: Musk stated that 80% of the output will be for space-based applications. He argues that solar power is 5x more effective in orbit and that the vacuum of space solves the massive heat problems faced by Earth-based data centers. 

While the project was officially launched in March 2026, volume production of the next-generation AI5 chips at this facility is currently projected for 2027.
